Birmingham is a city that has had its ups and downs. Birmingham grew out of the industrial revolution and was famous for its engineers and industrialists. In the post-war era, Birmingham declined as industry gradually migrated abroad in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It's currently in an upward phase, having undergone a programme of regeneration in the 1990s and 2000s and refocussed its attentions on research, retail and events.
Crime is policed by the West Midlands Police Force. The crime rates in Birmingham are relatively low, when compared against other British cities. However, there are areas where one must be "on guard" and vigilant. There is also reputed to be a "Yardie" presence within the Handsworth district.
